Manchester United have been advised to invest £120m in acquiring England captain Harry Kane instead of pursuing Viktor Gyokeres as a key transfer target.
United are one of a number of clubs who have expressed interest in signing goalscoring sensation Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon.
Signed from Championship side Coventry City in the summer of 2023, Gyokeres scored 43 goals in his first season at Sporting and already has 23 in 16 games this term.
Speculation that the Sweden international could be set to leave Sporting has only intensified following his manager Ruben Amorim’s move to Premier League club Manchester United.
The Red Devils are considering swooping for Gyokeres either in January or the summer but former United striker Louis Saha believes this would be a mistake.
He doubts Gyokeres is ‘the answer’ for Manchester United and says he would rather see Kane arrive at Old Trafford, even if it cost £120m.
Kane has scored a hugely impressive 61 goals in 61 games for Bayern Munich, having established himself as one of the most prolific goalscorers in Europe during his long spell with Tottenham.
Sitting on 213 Premier League goals, Kane may well be tempted to return to England at some stage to break Alan Shearer’s all-time record of 260.
‘It might be surprising, but I don’t think Man Utd should go after Viktor Gyokeres,’ Saha told BoyleSports, who offer Premier League odds.
‘I think he is a good player in an incredible run of form, even in the Champions League, but he won’t get the same luxuries as he does at Sporting.
‘Sporting are not under the same pressure as Manchester United, it’s a completely different animal.
‘Right now United have Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee and at times the pressure has looked to be a lot for them to handle too.
‘It’s hard to find players who can do what Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland can do, United need to find players that can really hurt the opposition and are proven in doing so and that’s a big task.
‘Manchester United have spent a lot of money and I don’t think Gyokeres is the answer.
‘If you can spend £120million on Harry Kane then they should do it tomorrow, there are very few guarantees in football but that’s what a club like United needs.’
As well as being Tottenham’s record goalscorer, Kane also surpassed Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney to become England’s all-time leading scorer.
The 31-year-old, who struggled during England’s run to the Euro 2024 final, will look to add to his tally during the international break when the Three Lions face Greece and Ireland in the Nations League.
