New Delhi: The Indian cricket team is all set to make their comeback to the field after a 45-day break, with the first Test of the two-match series against Bangladesh scheduled to take place in Chennai. Led by Rohit Sharma, the team has gathered in the city and had a training session at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium under the supervision of new head coach Gautam Gambhir. This series will mark Gambhir's debut as head coach, having taken over from Rahul Dravid in July. With a total of 579 matches played since their debut in 1932, Team India has secured victory in 178 matches, suffered the same number of losses, and seen 222 games ending in a draw.

If India defeats Bangladesh in Chennai, this would be a massive milestone that comes their way for the Rohit Sharma-led team. Such a win would give India their 179th Test win and would mean that they would have won one more Test than they have lost for the first time since their entry into Test cricket way back in 1932.

Rahul Dravid’s final series as head coach witnessed India dominate England with a 4-1 victory earlier this year. Notably, star batter Virat Kohli missed the series to be with his family following the birth of his son, Akaay.

Crucial WTC points will be up for grabs when India gears up for an arduous 10-match Test season starting with the two-match series. The period includes a three-Test home series against New Zealand and the high-profile five-match Border-Gavaskar series in Australia later this year.

India currently sit atop the World Test Championship table with 68.52 percentage points, while Australia closely follows in second place with 62.50 percentage points.

Bangladesh have surged to the fourth spot in the World Test Championship standings with 45.83 percentage points after their dominating 10-wicket win over Pakistan in the opening Test. A remarkable fightback in the second Test, led by a century from wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das, sealed a series sweep for the side.

The second Test of the series is scheduled to take place at Green Park, Kanpur, starting September 27.
